Whilst many people enjoy the benefits of having a filtration system installed in their homes, it is important that the filter is properly maintained if you want it to continuously provide you with clean water. Instead of replacing your water filter every few months, you might actually be surprised to learn that you can clean it a number of times before it needs to be changed.

Step 1: Choose a well-ventilated area in which to work (preferably one that is outdoors). Put on some protective gear (including heavy-duty gloves, safety glasses and a facemask) before commencing, as you will be working with some hazardous chemicals.

Step 2: Fill a bucket with around 2 litres of water, then slowly pour in 2 cups of muriatic acid. Use a long plastic stirrer to mix the two substances together until they have been blended and set the bucket aside.

Step 3: Use a relatively high-pressured hose to remove any loose debris from the water filter. Make sure that you spray each side of the filter, concentrating especially on areas with rust and calcium build-ups. Try not to stand too close with the hose, as you might damage the system.

Step 4: Completely submerge the filter in the bucket, making sure that it has been placed in a ventilated area that is well clear of children and pets. Leave the solution to soak for around 5 days.

Step 5: Fill a new bucket with about 1 litre of water, then remove the filter from the muriatic acid and place it in. Leave to sit for around 5 minutes, then remove and rinse thoroughly with the high-pressured hose. You can now reinstall the system and enjoy clean water again.

If you are having trouble finding a supplier of muriatic acid, you should check out a pool supply or hardware store (you may need to ask someone to help you find it, but it should be there). Whenever you are cleaning your water filter, it is important that you have properly prepared your work area and that you are wearing suitable safety gear to protect yourself.
